You will have received an email - and seen publicity on Staff Net - asking you to complete a survey with the not so catchy title of the Careers in Research Online Survey or CROS for short.

We realise that taking time out from your research to complete these surveys is not a top priority. However, we would be extremely grateful if you could do this, as it will benefit you and future cohorts of researchers. We will receive data at school and faculty level from CROS and so School and Faculty Senior Leadership – as well as The University - will be taking the results very seriously and looking at where we need to make improvements. You can see the actions taken by The University as a result of past CROS data here.

You can access the survey here.

The survey should take less than 20 minutes to complete and you get the chance to enter the prize draw for an iPad mini.

We would really like to hit an overall Faculty 50% response rate, which is an ambitious target, but one which will provide a real mandate for future action planning.

CROS will close at 23:59 on Friday 31 May 2013.

Posted on behalf of Professor Matt Lampon- Ralph, Associate VP for Research, The University of Manchester

Creating an impact in your research career - By Dr Jamie McDonald from Skyward Coaching. Wednesday 15 May 2013, 09:30 - 12:30, Simon 4.38-4.60
Those who fund and assess research and universities are increasingly interested in impact, requiring that those seeking funding demonstrate the impact of their work in their field, and also in the community, the economy and/or the environment. Likewise, anyone looking to lead a career, whether in research or elsewhere, would be well placed to be able to identify and articulate their desired road ahead as well as defining steps to take to get there. Through a series of activities, reflection and discussion, this workshop addresses these issues directly.

Are you a researcher and is your contract about to finish? Would continued access to your University email account and e-resources after the end of your contract be beneficial to you?

The Research Staff Association and the University have launched a pilot for allowing researchers to maintain access to their email and to e-resources after the end of their contract with the University (for 6 weeks, renewable throughout the duration of the pilot until April 2014).

Researchers whose contracts end after mid-January 2013 and before April 2014 should receive a letter/email from HR, signed by us and the Associate Vice President for Research, within the final month of their contract. In that letter/email we explain how you can join the scheme (it’s very simple, but this cannot be public information), so it is very important, if your contract is about to finish, that you take the time to read this!

Taking part in the pilot will give you continued access to your email account and to e-resources after you have left the University and until the pilot ends, i.e. April 2014.

Our aim is that the University extend this scheme beyond the pilot phase, and to include teaching staff as well… but for this to happen we will need to show that the scheme has been taken up and is useful - so if you are taking part in the pilot, your evaluation at the end of the scheme will be absolutely crucial.

Recently the President mentioned the scheme in one of her updates, and the news about the scheme is also on StaffNet

Additionally, there is an article in the most recent Incite issue (pdf)

There is a discrepancy between the dates: participation in the pilot was initially going to end mid May 2013 but it has now been extended until April 2014.

Please contact us at rsa@manchester.ac.uk if you have any questions about this scheme.

Posted on behalf of the RSA ‘extended access’ working group (Isabelle Darmon, Erin Baggaley, Sarah King-Hele, Samaneh Maysami, Kassandra Papadopoulou, Pamela Thompson)

Then spend just 20 minutes completing the Careers in Research Online Survey (CROS), the national survey for research staff, which opens on Monday, 22 April.

Professor Matt Lambon Ralph, Associate Vice President for Research, said: “Staff responses are vital in helping us understand what we are doing well and what we can do better to improve the working conditions, career aspirations and career development opportunities for research staff at the University.

“Time spent on this task will be a very useful and an important investment. Data will be used by the University’s Researcher Development Group to continue our work to improve University-wide procedures and practices that better support our research staff.

This is a call for RSA committee members, the RSA has grown substantially since its launch in April 2011, making it one of the most active in the UK, we currently have 235 registered researchers on our mailing list.

What we have done so far:

It started with a group of 4 individuals with a blank sheet of paper, we established our monthly meetings and socials, we had two successful interdisciplinary bids resulting to two very successful projects that have received internal attention (President, Vice President for Research) and attention in the media (Manchester City Council, BBC Radio Manchester, Manchester Evening News) and Conferences (International Vitae, National Research Staff Conference, UKRSA committee meetings).

As we are working on RSA projects, papers, meetings, and other exciting activities we would like to include more members on the committee.

It is empowering to see what an interdisciplinary group of research staff can do when working collaboratively.

What you can do:

You can contribute to one or more of the following: writing on the RSA website, blog, facebook, liaising with Research Staff Development Officers, organising meetings, organising socials, managing the communication and email correspondence, representing the Manchester RSA on national/international level, presenting at Research Staff induction days, organising committee meetings, take part in ongoing projects, co-writing small proposals for funds.

There are no fixed hours or duties. We are all volunteers and have busy jobs so we all contribute what we can, normally on an ad hoc basis.

What you could gain:

Strong networking within the four faculties, networking on a UK level (e.g. UKRSA, Vitae, conferences), networking with Incite Newsletter, developing organisational & management skills, develop initiative, gain experience in interdisciplinary bids for small scale projects and obtain deeper understanding of policies relating to your current post.

Requirements:

Be a research staff member at The University of Manchester, have integrity, work collaboratively, self motivation and enthusiasm!

If interested:

Please get in touch - email Kassandra.papadopoulou@manchester.ac.uk and Sarah.King-hele@manchester.ac.uk for an informal chat.

Our kind regards,

The RSA team: Erin, Helen, Hosam, Isabelle, James, Kassandra, Michaela, Samaneh, Sarah
