These range from local policies at The University of Manchester, to national policies driven by the UK government, funding and regulatory bodies, to European Union initiatives.

Why do we need research governance?

Research Governance can be defined as the broad range of regulations, principles and standards of good practice that exist to achieve, and continuously improve, research quality across all aspects of research in the UK and worldwide. Research governance is needed to:

  • Safeguard participants in your research
  • Protect you and other researchers/investigators by providing a clear framework to work within
  • Monitor your practice and performance to ensure ethical and scientific quality, and to promote good practice
  • Minimise risk

Good research conduct and research practice - guides

The University of Manchester has drawn up a Code of Good Research Conduct, which outlines the principles of good research practice that all researchers must comply with when conducting research. In addition to this, the Good Research Practice guide provides detailed advice on how you must perform research activities in accordance with best practice.

The Research Councils UK (RCUK) Policy and Code of Conduct on the Governance of Good Research Conduct sets out clear guidance on best practice for researchers and provides guidelines on how to manage research to ensure the highest standards, and on the reporting and investigation of unacceptable research conduct.
